Traffic Diversion into Cowes: Important Information for Residents and Visitors

28th January 2026

Southern Water has announced planned works to replace water mains along Horsebridge Hill, which will affect traffic routes into Cowes over the coming months.

When are the works taking place?

Work is scheduled to begin on Monday 26 January 2026 and is expected to continue until spring 2026.

Traffic changes and diversion

During the works, Horsebridge Hill will operate as a one-way system, with no access towards Cowes from Newport. A signed diversion route will be in place, as shown on Southern Water’s traffic management map.

  • Buses and emergency vehicles will still be able to use Horsebridge Hill as normal, managed by manual traffic lights.
  • Drivers heading into Cowes from Newport are advised to follow the diversion route and allow extra travel time.

Further details and a larger map of the diversion can be found on Southern Water’s website under Preventing leaks in Horsebridge Hill.

The Isle of Wight Foodbank encourages residents, volunteers, and visitors to be aware of these changes and plan journeys accordingly. Please share this information with anyone who regularly travels into Cowes via Horsebridge Hill.
