Why not fresh?

17th August 2020

With lockdown changing our shopping, eating, and growing habits, there is now a surplus of fruit and veg on the Island. This is wonderful as many are giving away their extra fruit and veg for free.

In response to Social Media comments asking why we do not accept these fresh items, please allow us to explain why we are only able to accept non-perishable donations.

Our Island foodbanks do not have the facility to receive and store quantities of fresh food.

The three day food parcel we give to our clients is made up of nutritionally balanced, non-perishable items based on government guidelines which is updated regularly via the Trussell Trust.

We have our own vegetable garden onsite where we pick vegetables fresh on the day for our clients to enjoy and have made the decision to work with the amount we have and no more.

We regularly update our current needs on our website and our Social Media pages, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, which allows us to continue providing a balanced food parcel to local people in crisis.

Thank you for all your support. We really appreciate it!
